Is Your Computer's Hard Drive Failing?

Posted on: 25 May 2022

One component of a computer that can break down over time is the hard drive. While there may be a day that you try to use your computer and it doesn't work at all, there are some warning signs that will let you know that a hard drive is on the verge of failing and that you should have your computer repaired.

Computer Performance Issues

The first thing that you should look out for are issues related to your computer's overall performance. Is the computer acting a bit slower than usual? Does it freeze up randomly while it is being used? These are some common issues that you should look out for, and you'll need to determine if the problem is hardware- or software-related.

Odd Noises

If you are using a traditional hard drive with a spinning disk, there are going to be a lot of moving parts within the drive that can make noise when the hard drive is malfunctioning. You may hear grinding sounds when the hard drive starts spinning, clicking sounds, an odd buzzing, or even whistling. It is hard to pinpoint exactly what a hard drive sounds like, but there are sounds that shouldn't be coming from the hard drive if it is working properly. While a spinning disk hard drive is not completely quiet, it shouldn't be noisy either.

Health Check Failure

There is software that you can use to check to see if your hard drive is failing or not. The software actually checks for bad sectors of the hard drive and reports back if there are problems with any portion having trouble reading or writing data. If you have a hard drive that comes back with errors, you'll definitely want to back up your data and replace it with a new one.

Corrupt Data

Another issue could be a hard drive that has corrupted data. You may notice that some files do not open or report errors if the file does open. You may have video files that look scrambled or glitches in them, which means all of the data is not there. This could be due to those bad sectors of the hard drive that are found during a health check.

If you are having a computer with these hard drive-related issues, it is worth having your computer repaired so that you have a new hard drive that will be dependable for daily use. Reach out to a computer repair company for more information.
